Chain maille isn’t just for jewelry.

Urchins

These little sculptures are formed from the 10-in-3 variant of the Japanese chain maille weave using 78 rings. The urchins are based on the dodecahedron, or 12-sided sphere, but the 12th side is left off to form the opening of the urchin’s shell.

Hives

Shadowboxes painted white house amorphous shapes, formed from mobius knots connected with small rings. All the rings are anodized niobium; the shapes are pinned in the shadowboxes with insect specimen pins — the back of the box has a layer of wax over cork. Evocative of honeycomb, or pieces of a wasp nest, and of whitewashed beehives out in the fields.
