Blogged: Crescent Maille at Handmade Parade

As an artist on & founding member of the new Handmade Parade online artists co-op, Crescent Maille is introduced to Handmade Parade’s blog audience. The blog has been active since February 2007.

Here’s a snippet:

I think many people have a preconceived notion about chain maille, associating it only with knights in armor and renaissance faires. There’s such potential to create jewelry that is totally modern, contemporary — different than any other metalworking technique out there. I hope to help bring about more awareness of the unique beauty of chain maille …

The Short Wave Bracelet (An Original Design)

A new original design in the Crescent Lace series, Wave Lace is composed of 5 sizes of rings. The Short Wave Bracelet is a bracelet that features a short segment of Wave Lace in the center, with a simple link chain on either side. The bracelet is available in the shop, and there are more photos & information in the gallery.

The Ribbon Bracelet is a design based on the European 4-in-1 weave. The bracelet is woven with the same technique, only “sideways”; it is a horizontal version of one of the most traditional chain maille weaves. I’ve named this the Ribbon Bracelet because the weave is incredibly flexible, so wonderfully pliable, it’s like a silk ribbon. The rings used in this bracelet are 4mm in diameter; the bracelet is 12mm wide — half an inch. It closes with a box clasp with a safety catch. The rings and clasp are sterling silver.

You can see more photos of it in the gallery.

New for Father’s Day

Extra Bold Jens Pind Bracelet

Just in time for Father’s Day, Crescent Maille is introducing a new bracelet to the shop. This Extra Bold Jens Pind Bracelet is made from 12 gauge rings, is 1/2-inch wide and 8-1/2 inches long — and it’s ready to ship immediately. It’s perfect for a man … but it’s also perfectly suitable for a woman, and will make her wrist look utterly delicate. You can find more images in the gallery (scroll towards the bottom of the page); you can purchase it here.

Handmade Parade

Crescent Maille is proud to be a founding member of Handmade Parade. Launched on 15 May 2008, Handmade Parade is an online artists’ co-op. From the site:

Handmade Parade began as a craft show in Sacramento, California, organized by Claire Bone. While the craft fairs were fun, family demands and difficulty finding large enough venues in the area drove Claire to seek other avenues for getting awesome handmade crafts to the masses. Etsy and Ebay are great places to find handmade goods, but their sheer size make it difficult to navigate and Claire knew she wanted to do something on a much smaller scale.

After working for several months on the Glitter and Grunge artists co-op, Claire decided to branch out and introduce Handmade Parade as a similar group, offering a more modern interpretation of vintage crafts, while also providing a place for members to sell kits and patterns along with their finished pieces.

Crescent Maille will offer four pieces for sale each month. Central to the concept of the site, at least one brand new design will be a “Handmade Parade Exclusive,” available only on the Handmade Parade site for the first month. Some may be new designs that will be added to the Crescent Maille line; some may be one-of-a-kind pieces that will only be made once. On the 15th of every month the selection on Handmade Parade will rotate and the exclusive piece(s) will be made available, so be sure to check each month.

This month’s Handmade Parade Exclusive is the Daisy Chain Necklace, the subject of the previous post.

Daisy Chain Necklace (an original design)

Crescent Maille has a new necklace design — the Daisy Chain necklace. Seven 3-ring mobius flowers are strung on a fine chain (a very fine chain — do not be deceived by the amazing magnification of the macro lens!). Each flower is made of 2 sterling silver and 1 gold fill ring (hence daisies). The rings are about 1/4-inch in diameter, and the row of daisies on the chain is about 3/4-inch wide. The chain is sterling silver and is 18 inches long.

For the next month the Daisy Chain necklace is available exclusively from Handmade Parade. More news about Handmade Parade coming soon.

Buried Treasury: Dig Up Crescent Maille

Buried Treasury, an innovative blog by Timothy Adam Designs, features “mini” picture treasuries of Etsy.com sellers’ work. Etsy sellers can rank their for sale items in any order, and the top ranked items are those that appear in the mini (which is generated by code provided by Etsy). Items can be re-ranked at anytime, therefore the minis on Buried Treasury are always changing.

Oxidized Jewelry Now Available

Crescent Maille now offers an “upgrade” when you buy a piece of jewelry (bracelet, pendant, earrings, necklace, or pendant & earring sets) — oxidation. To quote the upgrade description in my shop:

The natural process for sterling silver is to tarnish very slowly over time — this is called oxidation — and it is easily polished back to its original shine. But there are various methods that force instant oxidation. Then parts of the piece are gently polished up to more satiny shine. This results in a piece that looks softer, darker, and “antique.”

(Because of the nature of chain maille, the jewelry is not “static.” The rings move and rotate within the weave. Different weaves require different types of polishing. For example, the bracelets shown in the photographs are Jens Pind bracelets. Since the rings are free to rotate in the weave, one has to think of them like “tires.” So each ring has to be polished individually — polishing each part of the “tire” that would touch the road [so to speak], one by one. This is why the pricing varies.)

Here are photos of shiny sterling silver and oxidized sterling silver side-by-side — the first photo is of Jens Pind chains, and the second photo is of the Byzantine Rose pendant:

cMaille & Co. Blog

After a brief hiatus, posting at the cMaille & Co. blog, “Things We Like,” has resumed. The blog is a virtual gallery of all sorts of independent artists that we (“we” being myself and my “Co.,” Rex) admire. Many are artists and craftspeople on Etsy; some are not. Stop by and take a look around.
